Psychology of Sexuality Syllabus Fall 2001

This course will discuss many different aspects of sexuality.  Topics include he history of sex, cultural diversity in sexuality, male and female anatomy, sexual arousal and techniques, pregnancy, forms of birth control, sexually transmitted diseases, paraphilias, prostitution, love and relationships, hormones and homosexuality.

The Nature of the class: In this class controversial topics will be discussed.  You may be asked to participate in group discussions.  Many people find sexuality to be a very difficult subject to talk about.  If you feel uncomfortable, you are not required to participate actively in a discussion, but I would like you to be attentive to others opinions.  If any particular subject area is extremely uncomfortable for you please see me so that we may discuss this, you may be excused in some instances.  Each student will be required to sign a confidentiality form that requires students to pledge that they will not repeat what is said in class will be confidential.

Book Requirement: An Exploration of Human Sexuality by: Baldwin.  This book is required for the class. This book has been prepared for you in an attempt to curb the costs of the textbook.  This book is a continual working project of mine.  It is by no means completed and is in a constant state of revision.  I apologize for the great many spelling and grammar errors.  The book was designed to cut student book costs in order to ease financial burdens.

Attendance Policy: Attendance will be taken on a daily basis .  I take attendance very seriously as this is an experiential class. We will have a variety of films, guest speakers, and group discussions that are essential to the class.  Anyone can read about sex in a book, but what sets this class apart is the opportunity to explore these issues with your classmates.  For every 4 classes that you miss, you grade will be dropped one letter grade.  In addition, the tests are a combination of lecture and book material.  Your grade will most likely suffer if you miss class.

Drop Policy: I may drop you if I feel you have missed 4 classes and two or more tests, but it is absolutely your responsibility to drop the class if you feel you no longer wish to continue.  If you do not drop yourself, there is a possibility of receiving a F at the end of the course semester.

YOUR GRADE

Your grade will be determined by 4 quizzes (50 points each), and the final exam (100 points).   The points required to achieve an A will be 90% of the total points offered in the class, 80% for a B, 70% for a C, 60% for a D and less than 60% for an F.

Quizzes: The quizzes will be multiple choice.  You will need to bring a number 2 pencil and scantron form 882 ES or LOVAS.  These may be purchased at the book store.  You will be given 50 minutes to complete the quiz.  We will then return and go over the quiz and resume lecture for the next chapters.  In the event that you miss a quiz, there are no makeups.  You will be able to drop the lowest test score at the end of the semester.  Dropping the lowest test grade has been designed for emergencies not be cause you did not study for a particular test.  Please do not ask me to make up a quiz because NO will be the answer.  Absolutely no exceptions.  If you miss two quizzes, my advice would be to do as much extra credit as possible or drop the class.  Quiz dates will be announced in class meetings.

Final Exam: Your final exam in this class is scheduled for Monday Wednesday Dec 19th  at 9:00 am.   You are to bring a number 2 pencil and a Scantron for 882-ES or LOVAS. The final exam will have forty questions on it that are cumulative and the remaining 60 questions will be from the last chapters covered in the course.

Cheating Policy: I take cheating very seriously.  If you are found cheating in this class, you will automatically receive an F for your course grade.  If you are seen to have wandering eyes during the quizzes, you will be asked to move to the front of the room to take your quizzes.
