The Microwebsite is being completely re-written , but in the "order" you have your major exams LP1; Midterm/LP2, the Comprehensive Final Exam and the Micro-40 Final Exam

Our design problems involve the fact that  we are barely able to keep the site revisions ahead of the class evaluation dates.  Please be patient and appreciate these effort in your behalf.

Currently, my computer tech and I are spending hundreds of hours compiling and organizing a completely accessible study site for each major evaluation.  This site will be an Apple Macbook/Desktop, Ipod, Ipad, Windows/Linux PC, Android/Windows/Google Smartphone, Internet MOBILE, Android/Tablet usable site called: EVERYTHING LAB PRACTIAL I (E-LP1).  Do not expect perfection as today is the début of the site!

I just ran the LP1 SCANTRONS and a much larger number than usual did well... GREAT JOB - great individual effort, working on old tests and study grouping!  Some people are NOT with the program and made as low as 51/170 on the Scantron.  EVERYONE did well on the Staining - THANKS!  I will have the computations done by Tues and new gradesheets by NEXT Wed.  PLEASE USE THE MICROBLOG SITE FOR MT studying...

THE NEXT MATERIAL FOR MICROBIOLOGY is the MIDTERM/LAB PRACTICAL 2 EXAM!

Included in the midterm/lp2 exam are the following:

1) All Unknown Cards (Purple Procedure and Blue Experiment cards) all due in perfect condition and alphabetized by soon after Spring Break!  NO LATE CARDS!

2) How to start and do the Unknown experiments - the Streak Isolation Lab, followed by the  "Dots-R-Us" Lab, and Purity Check Labs as well as the constant cycling of the STOCK and USE slants (2) from overnight incubation to refrigeration every 10-14 days

3) How to collect the Unknown Test Data and use it to determine the Genus (Dichotomous key) and species (LIBRARY BONUS ASSIGNMENT) and how to do the BONUS WORD PROBLEMS that are on the MIDTERM EXAM/Lab PRACTICAL 2

4) Introductory Notes (Science - essay), Chapter 4, 9, 5, 6, 7, 8 lecture powerpoints

Feel Free USE the completely accessible new site from ANY INTERNET DEVICE using the Flash Buttons below or by clicking directly on the hyperlink or by copying any of the links and pasting them into your browser: Please at least view... EVERYTHING LAB PRACTIAL I (E-LP1):

YOUR NEXT IMPORTANT DATES IN MICROBIOLOGY!  THE UNKNOWN CARDS ARE DUE soon after Spring Break and 2 weeks after that the LP2/MIDTERM EXAM

ON EVERY RETURNED TEST/EVALUATION/EXAM Please review the questions and answers on the ONES YOU MISSED!  If you see an error in grading or computation, circle the numbered question or computation area in RED and return it to me with a big RED "REGRADE PLEASE" written at the top of the scantron... PLEASE DO NOT USE PENCIL!  NOTE: If I make a mistake in grading (and I usually do make at least 1 error) and you DO NOT bring it to my attention, you do NOT get those additional points.  You cannot "live" on the work/corrections made by others in your class - CHECK EVERY QUESTION!  Please do not try and alter/change your answers or add letters for "erasers" as EVERY scantron is scanned scanned into my data cloud and I check for dishonesty.... For Internet Explorer user button problems: AFTER you update WINDOWS (restart); update Internet Explorer (restart) and then turn off your antivirus and then update Java.com (restart).. you may need to alter your security settings.  Go to Tools, Options, Security, ADVANCED and make sure the boxes listed are checked (ONLY)... and your level of security is medium.

ON OUR APPLE PROBLEMS!  If you use Mac/Macbook anything APPLE on this website and you have found problems and then an easier way to do it, email me your ideas/solutions and I will share them with everyone.

I do know that both Apple and Microsoft try to make each other's customers suffer, this is not my fault and the product of a consumer-based capitalistic society.  We can however share ideas and solutions.  I know that the Apple Browser - SAFARI does NOT work well with the website... I have found that Firefox and Avant Browsers work better - even Internet Explorer for Apple or the Google Chrome browsers work better than Safari.  Try each of these and see which works best... then, email me your ideas.

If you have a PC and you can't see the buttons - go down on this page and try my suggestions.  If you had this problem but have now "SOLVED" it, send me an email with your ideas/solutions - especially if the browser individual settings needed altering as I am NOT A COMPUTER EXPERT... I do not know near as much as some of you about these sort or things... but - we can share knowledge and succeed.

Griping and complaining doesn't help... and if that all you are willing to do, perhaps another instructor is a better solution for you... HOWEVER, if you try and we all work together - that would help you now and in the future when things don't go perfectly for you.

APPLE FOLKS one person has suggested way to use this website on an Apple device that is easier than saving page addresses.  It is to use the Apple "bootstrap" program.  This was a program that allowed Apple to run PC.  Has anyone tried that solution??  If apple users download the Puffin web browser, it will load anything that uses flash.  Safari is now working for some apple computers... try it again... try do download the newest Java.com again as it updated this week AGAIN!

Let me know thanks...

FINALLY: I have found a way to printout every significant page address - alphabetically. It will take me hours but I will make this folder and put it in dropbox...as soon as I can...

SEVERAL of you are NOT receiving my emails as your email address is NOT current with the college (on your records).  If you are registered and NOT receiving my emails you must go to the Administration Building and correct your email address - CORRECT THIS NOW! I know this because when I email it says "2 students do not have emails and were not contacted."

If you are enrolled SIGN/initial the official roll sheet daily for the first 3 weeks.  THIS CLASS WILL NOT BE ADDING WALK-INS as it is way over subscribed!  Official seating will be assigned at the end of the 2nd week of class.  If you have seeing/hearing problems, please notify me today at the end of class. If you want to be an official "Checker or Recorder" please send an email to me requesting the position and note it on your sign-in sheet during the second class. If I have more than 1 volunteer, I will assign the positions by the first email received.

An official Spring 2013 Calendar may be found online soon you may collect your syllabus in the class you attend.  THANKS!

I DO NOT TOLERATE CHEATING IN ANY FORM... be aware that I am scrutinizing you during tests and in your work... DO NOT OBTAIN ANSWERS fraudulently...

USING THIS MICROWEBSITE - DIRECTIONS:  You are on the Microwebsite INDEX Page

Click on the "Microwebsite Login" button below to enter the instructional website, you will be taken to the Microwebsite LOGIN PAGE.  After inputting your Instructor NAME and the provided Password you will be sent to Entryportal Page

On the Entryportal page click on the  GOLD Navigation or NAV Page button to go to the main website.  Everything on the Microwebsite is essentially accessed through this NAVIGATION PAGE - the NAV page is the MAIN page of the Microwebsite.

The Nav page has all the major entry points for information pertaining to this course: General Information buttons, LAB BUTTONS, & DAILY BUTTONS.

Please be aware that some classes, labs, and help sessions are videotaped.  This is for teaching purposes in order to improve instruction, for demonstration, and to improve safety procedures... Good Luck!

Please read under the button labeled: GRADE PROBLEMS from the Nav Page (or the top of this page) to see the grading standards for your class as well as ways to earn BONUS POINTS!  Also, note that we are asking for volunteers to be CLASS/LAB CHECKERS.  These checkers are NEEDED in for each section - please volunteer by seeing me before or after your class during the first week of school.  I will need: 2 class audio Recorders, 2 before class Microscope Checkers, 2 end of class Microscope Checkers, 2 during and end of class Room Checkers, 2 after class Sink Checkers plus 2 Administrative Class Aids or Grader/Checkers.  Those assisting in the administration of class and lab will be dismissed/exempt from the 10 hours of Lab Prep Work in Micro-40 and only have to attend the hours of the Instructor Help Sessions during the term to receive their Micro-40 grade.

IF YOU ARE HAVING PROBLEMS seeing the BUTTONS on the pages if could be a BROWSER PROBLEM - TRY the AVANT BROWSER: or Chrome Browser or "update" Internet Explorer...  If you install a new kind of browser DO NOT IMPORT your internet explorer settings or bookmarks...  Finally, if you have updated your operating system, downloaded the latest browser and updated java.com - the only reason you are not seeing "buttons" is your browser security settings are wrong.  Move security to medium and make sure activex is not turned off.  Other settings may need changing as well and I am not a computer expert so you may have to ask one... good luck.  Tablets DO NOT WORK as the do not have FLASH.

NOTE: This website does NOT work for devices without "FLASH" - you must access the Microwebsite with a FLASH-ENABLED microcomputer or smartphone.  Apple devices do not utilize FLASH.  Also, please update your JAVA files at JAVA.com before attempting login.  Ask me in lecture how to partially utilize this website using and Apple Device. Go into the microwebsite and learn how to navigate the pages:

LOCKERS:  M-20 uses the TOP drawer A... M-1 uses the second drawer B... DO NOT USE OTHER DRAWERS C or D!  Students by the windows see me...

AT LACC IF YOU PUT A LOCK ON A DRAWER YOU MUST GIVE OR EMAIL ME THE DRAWER NUMBER (or seat number) and COMBINATION or it will be removed.

PRINT, COMPLETE, and RETURN if you have bought a lock for the drawer

LACC Micro 40 Final Exam material and Test   This is a take-home Final Exam that is due in your Final Exam Packet if you are taking Lecture with me.  If you are NOT taking lecture this term, please leave the FE with me in SC-112 before Dec 14th.  If you have NOT finished your hours with Lab Prep or with me you can do "cleaning" of the lab during the last few weeks of Dec.  or the first 2 weeks of January.  See me and include a statement that you will complete the hours attached to your FE.  Thanks DRH

LACC Micro-40 EXPLAINED!  Micro-40 is an important benefit offered to all students currently enrolled in a Microbiology Lecture class at LA City College.   Please click on M-40 below to familiarize yourself with this important option.  Those who took M-40 in a previous class may take it up to 3 times total.  See me for an Add Card during the first week of classes or add online.

Microbiology 40 (1 sem hr #0932 "TBA" usually Fri and or certain Sat morning/afternoons) is an additional semester hour of Microbiology Laboratory experience AND microbiology HELP!

Micro-40 has 3 required parts (1) additional  Instructor assistance time (2) additional time to complete in-class laboratory assignments & (3) additional experience in a functioning microbiology preparation laboratory. You are signed in/out of Micro-40 and you must complete at least 20 hours of attendance during the 18 week semester; grading is by satisfactory attendance/participation as well as a "take-home" self-study unit which is a Final Exam.  See the instructor during the first two weeks of class if you have questions.  The first organizational meeting of Micro-40 is on the first Friday in October at 9 AM in SC-110.  If you cannot attend at that time you may schedule a meeting at any time on Fridays with the Lab Tech Naira.

You may take Micro-40 three times at LA City College. During the second and third term of M40 you will be assigned a special project - see the instructor.  You must have taken or be taking Micro-1 or Micro-20 at LACC to take Micro-40.  Micro-40 cannot be used to substitute for lab credit when you have taken your lecture at another college/university.

To find out about when Micro 40 meets:  (1) CHECK YOUR DAILY CLASS ANNOUNCEMENT BOARD - it has the latest updates (2) Check your email and Check the INDEX page for any EMERGENCY ANNOUNCEMENTS and the weekend schedule - BEFORE ATTENDING!  (3) Check the MICROBIOLOGY COURSE CALENDAR

You do not have to attend every session of M40 nor do you have to arrive and leave at a specific time.  You may choose times and dates suitable to your needs in class but you cannot attend for less than 1 hour each visit.  M40 Instr Assistance Hours and Lab Prep Hours may be substituted for each other with permission but you must total 20+ total hours by the end of the term (Instr Help + Lab Prep).  CHECKERS do NOT HAVE TO COMPLETE the Lab Prep Hours as the are doing Lab Prep in the classroom prior and after class each day.

IF YOU MADE AN "i" in a previous term, PLEASE DO NOT RE-REGISTER.  Come to my first class during the next semester and discuss your status.   YOU HAVE 1 calendar year to repeat or 'make-up' the class; if you do not make-up your work the grade defaults to the grade listed on your notification - usually an "F."

EMAIL RULES:  PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR LAST NAME, ID#, and SECTION # in the SUBJECT LINE with a short topic word.  All information you are communicating should be located INSIDE THE EMAIL... Usually the college computers do not allow me to download attachment files.  THERE IS 1 EXCEPTION - PLEASE SEND LATE UNKNOWN PAPERS AS A "WORD" ATTACHMENT ONLY as I must grade the "formatting" on your paper... THANKS!

TEST DAY RULES: Remember that regular lecture/lab seating is alphabetical by last name and by random number on testing days - on every evaluation or test day, come into the class and put your "things" at the front of the room ON or UNDER THE TABLES ONLY (not in the walkway)! Select a number from the container, read it, return it to the "Used #'s" container and sit in that seat for that period of testing only. ALL TESTS have instructions or directions that must be read completely and failure to read such directions could cause you to loose points.  Each evaluation (including Pop Quizzes) covers the material from the first day to the last lecture before the "TEST" plus a few questions from the ASSIGNED material to be read.  The material in class does not follow the textbook exactly and some lectures may "pull" material from future chapters or from handouts and videos - please be aware of this and follow-up if you have questions... Sometimes our tests will CONTAIN QUESTIONS ON HOW TO NAVIGATE THIS WEBSITE as many people are not taking the 'time' to look around and discover the links!  Pop Quizzes are usually 10 or so multiple choice and are given on days you do not have another test.  They contain 7 questions on the previous lecture and 3 on the assigned reading.

DAILY LECTURE/LAB RULES:  When you enter the room, place your "things" in your assigned chair, wash your hands well at the sink and wipe down the tabletop with the disinfectant provided on the tables.  Use the same paper you used to dry your hands (only 2 sections please!) and smear the disinfectant around the tabletop.  Let it air-dry.  Then use the tabletop.  Just before exiting the Micro Lab, complete these actions in reverse (wipe down, air dry, wash hands).  Please do not leave the "lab" with your smock and gloves on - "it frightens the natives in the halls!"

CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR RULES:  PLEASE NO ACTIVE CELL PHONES, NO TEXTING, DO NOT PHOTOGRAPH EXAM QUESTION SHEETS WITHOUT PERMISSION IN ADVANCE, NO READING OF EMAIL or EMAILING DURING CLASS OR LAB! Warning 1st time -10 pts afterward!  TURN your electronic devices OFF or to Vibrate when entering the classroom!!! You may tape-record or use a laptop to take notes, but do not "chat" or "email/text" in lecture.  Some classes, labs, and help sessions are videotaped for teaching purposes and to improve instruction; by attending you are giving your permission to be filmed in a teaching situation.

PLEASE no: sleeping, eating, drinking, smoking, applying makeup, or any distracting behavior during the class. "Horseplay" is not acceptable behavior in the lab or classroom.   You are NOT allowed into the Microbiology area without a staff/instructor; however you may enter the classroom if the door is open if you wash your hands and disinfect before seating yourself to study.  DO NOT COME INTO THE LAB or LECTURE ROOMS and work on lab without permission.  Labs meet during scheduled times ONLY.  Remember: DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING DURING LAB - microbes are "out!"  PLEASE, no visible coffee-cups, bottles, or food of any kind.

Each student is expected to show equal and proper respect to others. You have a right to free speech and free association outside a formal classroom.  Please avoid any overt or perceived actions that might be interpreted as prejudice or discrimination based on: age, sex, sexual orientation, religion, race, ethnicity, disability, or economic status; such is PROHIBITED in this class and is grounds for immediate dismissal from the class!  If you have a difficulty in class or believe you have been mistreated, please contact the instructor privately as soon as possible.  We benefit from the extreme diversity of our student population.  Everyone in a free democratic society MUST respect and defend the dignity and value of each of its members equally... Suggestions are encouraged to improve the class and the lab - EMAIL ME!

DISHONESTY:  DO NOT BE a person caught CHEATING (in ANY WAY such as: talking, whispering, cheat sheets, using electronic devices, changing graded answers, using false data, copying without referencing the source, copying another person's work, or exchanging different "FORMS" of a test during administration - etc)... If you are seen cheating and you check your score online and see a "0", you do NOT  have an error in your grade!  I collect evidence when I think there is cheating going on and may ask you to leave my classes permanently.  Remember: DO NOT PHOTOGRAPH EXAM QUESTION SHEETS WITHOUT PERMISSION IN ADVANCE or ask for a Bathroom break or any other "breaks" as they are discouraged during evaluations and each student must be accompanied by a monitor when out of the room (NO CELL PHONES) such breaks must be very very short - ask permission and do not abuse this privilege. Please buy a good #2 pencil with a good eraser.  If you want to change an answer, erase and remark; then, put a capital letter to the right of the question about where the letter "g" would go.  NO MORE THAN 4 mis-erasers 2X during any term will be applied to your grade.  Learn to mark carefully.  When I see cheating I take witness statements as well as the "Proctor's" statement... Then, I apply the consequences. If you wish to challenge this please make an appointment by email!  If you cheat on a required component of the course you will receive a "0" on that assignment and an "F" in the course and you will have to repeat the class.

You will be dropped if you miss more than 2 complete class meetings!!!!!  If you are "late" then come anyway - slip into the class quietly...

OFFICE NUMBER: If you need to contact me in the office you may try to reach us at (323) 953-4000  x 2791; if you leave a message, please note that the message machine is RARELY checked... Emails are ANSWERED IMMEDIATELY!

GRADING: You can return one (1) paper that I have taken off points for recording infractions once by putting it in your Final Exam packet and I will give them back ONCE on 1 paper only!  I will NOT return points for cheating or writing on exams.  I WILL NOT MAKE CORRECTIONS ON SCANTRON ERASERS MORE THAN up to 4 erasers on 1 paper per term!  If you do not buy a better eraser and learn to erase and remark.. you will have to retake the exam using a different version of the exam.  No more than 4 erasers on 1 test ONCE.  If there is another dispute you may request to retake another version of the Exam after the second instance of "misgrades"

*SUGGESTIONS for Students having problems viewing the MicroWebsite:

NOTE: This website does NOT work for devices without "FLASH" - you must access the Microwebsite with a FLASH-ENABLED microcomputer or smartphone.  Apple devices do not utilize FLASH, do they have limited functionality - each page can be viewed by address but the buttons do not work with Apple devices.  Please update your JAVA files at JAVA.com before attempting login. If you are attempting to access a microwebsite page on a non-flash enabled device you must first obtain the exact web address, then you must enter and bookmark each page individually to be able to return to it.  If you are using a flash-enabled device and cannot enter the website, then you are probably typing the LOGIN wrong (not using ALL CAPS and no periods.....) or:

(1) MOST PROBABLY YOU DO NOT HAVE updated JAVA! Go to www.java.com  and download the java virtual machine.  It is in the upper right corner of the page... Follow the instructions exactly.

(2) Your Browser is incompatible or out of date; download and install either the newest Internet Explorer, Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or AVANT BROWSERS (Google it!)

(3) Your CACHE is full. Go into your hard drive and look for THE TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES.  Open this and delete the contents as each time your browser looks at an online website, the information is stored in your Temp. Internet File folder which, after a time becomes "FULL!"

(4) Your security settings are wrong or set too high.  Go to your INTERNET Browser... Tools... SECURITY Settings and select ADVANCED... Always, make sure that the latest "JAVA" is installed from java.com

PLEASE NOTE: If you are downloading the Class PowerPoint Notes in PDF... the files are large and take about 30 seconds to open after you click on the Chapter.  WAIT 30 seconds "AFTER" clicking on the Chapter buttons before moving your Browser.  YOU MUST HAVE THE LATEST JAVA as well as the latest ADOBE READER TO OPEN THE PDF files   - update JAVA FIRST!  The Java update will allow you to download OPEN OFFICE which is a free word processing multi-use program that will save/open files in almost any format you wish.  If you are not running antivirus/anti spyware, you can use the Microsoft Security Essentials, it is a free download

*Micro-40 students: ALL  M-40 students must complete the MICRO-40 FINAL EXAM and print and include it in your Final Exam Packet - select your final exam date and time from that offered online. Micro-40 students must read and turn-in the simple Micro-40 Final Exam in their Final Exam Packet on Final Exam Day.  See Micro-40 button

MICROBIOLOGY 40 has 3 parts: YOU MUST COMPLETE ALL 3 to achieve an "A"

1) Register for Microbiology 40 section 0932. Then attend (4) four meetings of the Teacher Help Sessions with me: Selected FRIDAY'S (and a few Saturday's) only from the 4th to the 14th week of each term) - always according to the Course Calendar and held in SC-112!  You must come at least 4 hours during the term.  You must sign the attendance sheet each time!

2) M-40 Lab Prep Training/Experience with DRHicks:  on FRIDAY mornings according to the course calendar.  Those students who are room checkers get a BONUS on their LRB AND do their 10 hours in the classroom but must have the inside of their LRB cover signed by me.  They must attend the required Help Sessions as well.

If you are seen NOT doing your checker assignment, you credit will be voided; I have noticed the sink, room, and scope checkers are NOT doing their assignments during the last weeks of class... I am noting this!

3) Take notes during instruction in M-40 concerning an important component of microbiology lab preparation.  Then, before Final Exam Week - read, write and print/ submit a summary/multiple choice review of that training. INCLUDE YOUR MICRO-40 FINAL EXAM IN YOUR FINAL EXAM PACKET or you will not get a GRADE!

To complete the review and simple Micro-40 Final Exam, click here:

1) Many of you are missing a few things... and only studying the night before.  Or NOT KNOWING WHEN THINGS ARE DUE.  Remember, the announcements will be here if you forget - don't email me about what is on the test if you have copied the board - LOOK IN YOUR LRB or here.

2) Please do not email me questions DURING TESTING... I have no time to answer hundreds of questions on the day of exams.  The tests are given in day pairs... Monday/Tuesday or Wed/Thurs. ----- so if you want information ask by Sunday for the next week's test... but not on a day I give the test; Thanks!

3) Grade sheets are update about every 2 weeks... check your email.  If you find an error, print out the grade sheet, circle the error and bring it and the proof to me in your next class...
