Course Objectives:
This course will focus on the proper method of yoga practice. Students completing this course will be able to:       
  • identify the philosophical, historic and cultural roots of yoga practice
  • practice stress reduction techniques using a variety of modalities
  •  focus on the Hatha Yoga technique as well as breathing and meditation/relaxation exercises derived from other styles.
  • identify a variety of yoga poses using the Sanskrit names
  •  identify and employ correct use of muscle groups in order to gain maximum benefit from the Yoga poses.
  • design personal fitness routines for others that will be enhanced by the awareness of how breathing and relaxation affect the bodies flexibility and endurance.
  • SLO 1:. Create and perform a yoga vinyasa sequence, incorporating 2-4 partner yoga positions and demonstrating correct positioning of yoga poses (asanas), body alignment and modifications as appropriate.
  • SLO 2: Discuss and analyze basic yoga concepts, theory, and philosophy.

Modifications may be suggested and precautionary measures (including clearance by your medical professional) should be followed in order to assure your safety.

Required: The Key Muscles of Yoga Volume 1 by Ray Long (available from Amazon and at LACC Bookstore) ISBN:160743-2382
 

1. Attendance is crucial as it is the basis for all improvement.

2. Knowledge of the philosophical roots of Hatha Yoga

3. Identify yoga poses by their Sanskrit name.

4. Perform asanas  poses with correct alignment.

4. Demonstrate an understanding the use of muscles in body work.

5. Evaluation of one's own physical and spiritual awareness due to changes that the class has brought about with regard to fitness, stress management and philosophical thought.

Grading:
 IF FOR SOME REASON YOU CANNOT COMPLETE THIS COURSE YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR DROPPING THE CLASS. IF YOU DO NOT OFFICIALLY DROP THE COURSE BY THE 2ND WEEK OF THE SEMESTER A GRADE OF "W" WILL APPEAR IN YOUR TRANSCRIPTS. FAILURE TO DROP THE COURSE BEFORE FINALS WILL RESULT IN A GRADE OF "F".

Final grade will be out of 100 points as follows:

Attendance with participation in the practice is out of 60 points. Each class missed equals minus 3 points.*** Each tardy* equals minus 1 points.

Mid-term Quiz on Asanas and Historical Background is out of 10 points.

Mid-term Quiz Date: Fri., Oct.  27. Bring a #882-E-LOVAS Scantron and a #2 pencil NO MAKEUPS ALLOWED

 

Effort and improvement including in-class assignments is out of 10 points.

Final exam is out of 20 points - 10 points for reflective  paper and 10 points for performance section.

Due Date for Written Final Paper: At the final exam appointment ( can be sent via e-mail to <ecklerp@lacitycollege.edu>  DO NOT LEAVE IN BOX ON OFFICE DOOR OR SLIP UNDER OFFICE DOOR.

Performance Final Exam: Fri. Dec. 8& Dec. 15, .(If you have a conflict or require a special accommodation please see teacher 3 weeks IN ADVANCE)**

Extra Credit:
A maximum of three classes may be made up in any  other yoga class with the permission of the instructor for a credit of 3 points for each makeup. Have the teacher of the class sign a note or makeup slip (available from Ms. Eckler). Make sure that your name, the date and the length of the class you took is on the note.

For additional extra credit you may watch the following video, answer the questions on this form and submit it to the teacher. This will provide 3 points extra credit.

90-100 A
80-89 B
70-79 C
60-69 D
Below 60 F

Attire:
Students should wear loose comfortable clothing that allows stretch and bare feet. It is best to perform Yoga practice on an empty stomach. PLEASE BRING A LARGE TOWEL TO CLASS. Mats will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own.

*ALL LATECOMERS MUST CHECK-IN WITH TEACHER AT THE END OF CLASS IN ORDER TO OBTAIN PARTIAL CREDIT FOR ATTENDANCE.

Academic Dishonesty. Violations of Academic Integrity include, but are not limited to, the following actions: cheating on an exam, plagiarism, working together on an assignment, paper or project when the instructor has specifically stated students should not do so, submitting the same term paper to more than one instructor, or allowing another individual to assume one’s identity for the purpose of enhancing one’s grade.
 
***Excused absences must be accompanied by a note from a doctor, hospital, jury duty receipt, or funeral program. An e-mail or phone call to the instructor must be delivered as well. No excused absences will be accepted for the final exam or performance.
