Reading 1: Box Office Performance for 6 Films
The graph below plots the cumulative box office of six well-known films
as they played during the all important summer run. Five of these films were opened wide as mainstream releases. Ulee’s Gold was originally an art
house release, but opened on more and more screens as time went on.
All figures are in $millions. Items to note:
1) Batman IV levels off at week 7, yet continues
to play for 2 more weeks, before being pulled from exhibition.
2) My Best Friend’s Wedding starts more slowly
at the box office, but exceeds cume BO of Batman in week 7. However it has begun to decelerate, and is
pulled 2 weeks later, without going flatline.
3) Hercules start with the same profile as
Wedding, but decelerates sharply in week 4
4) Face/Off was pulled a little early while it
was still earning $2M per week.
5) Speed 2 was held in theaters too long as it
earned a mere $400K each of its last two weeks.
6) The shape of the graph for Ulee’s Gold is
different in shape, not just timing, from the other mass market films.

The graphs above have had regression analysis applied. For each one, a fourth power equation was found to fit the data points with a match of R=0.995 or better. These are incredibly good fits, with less chance than 5 in 1000 of being statistical accidents.
This indicates that for some reason, total box office is a function of time in the market place. Time contributions have not just the expected 1st power contribution (that is, the longer a film is in theaters, the more money it earns), but also 2nd, 3rd, and 4th power contributions.
The constant at the end of predictive equation is related to the opening weekend media spending
The one film that has a very different formula is Ulee’s Gold. It has a constant of opposite sign from the others--i.e., there was no media blitz to launch it.
