Assignment #1

What is a Portrait?
Objective: To understand what makes a portrait photograph compelling.
Assignment: Find examples of basic, good, and great portrait photographs for class discussion.
Turn in: Bring 3 examples of portrait photographs-- One basic portrait, one good portrait, and one great portrait. Answer the following questions on the reverse side of this assignment sheet.
1. What is a portrait photograph?
2. What is a great portrait photograph?

What is a portrait photograph? What makes a good portrait photograph, and what makes a portrait photograph unforgettable?
For this assignment, bring in 3 examples of portraits for a class discussion on this subject. These examples should include a basic portrait, a good portrait, and a portrait you think is truly unforgettable.
These portraits may be taken from any source, including your own archives, magazines, books, or the internet. If the picture was found in a book, please make a high-quality copy, noting the source of the picture on the back. If the picture was found in a magazine, either make a copy or carefully cut out the picture, using your own discretion. (Do not rip pictures out of library books or magazines unless you want to suffer eternal damnation or get a failing grade in this class.) The pictures can be any size, though for purposes of class discussion, the bigger they are, the easier they will be to see.
Please write your name on the backs of all pictures and submit them to me in a sturdy clear envelope which is also labeled with your name. Include this assignment sheet with your answers to the above questions.
